Paparazzi restaurant brings to RP a 'taste of Italy'

Taking a culinary journey through Italy has never been this easy as Edsa Shangri-La hotel's Papparazzi restaurant treats its guests to a 5-month Italian feast.

In a special promo dubbed "All Roads Lead to Roma", the restaurant will be featuring authentic cuisine from a particular Italian region every month, from August to December this year.

This month, Paparazzi restaurant will be serving Sicilian specialties like fresh seafood dishes, polpetti (meatballs), and its savory pastries.

A sample Sicilian feast at Paparazzi includes Vegetarian rice balls with artichoke puree and Tartar of tuna and balsamic marinated eggplant for appetizers; followed by Catanese style fish soup with capers, black olives, and fresh tomato.

Main dishes include Bucatini (a thick spaghetti-like pasta) with anchovies, black olives, puréed artichokes, and cherry tomato; along with pan-seared tuna loin with capers, red onion, mint, and white wine. They also have artichoke-crusted lamb rack with potato cake, goat cheese ricotta canelloni (rectangular pasta sheets) and a red wine reduction sauce.

The Sicilian menu finishes up with Grappa (grape-based pomace brandy) infused with orange and coffee beans and Sicilian style pastry rolls with ricotta cheese & mixed candied fruit.

From August 1 to 31, Paparazzi restaurant will also feature many more delicious Sicilian dishes like Swordfish carpaccio (traditional thinly sliced or flattened meat appetizer) with salmoriglio sauce made with olive oil, lemon, garlic, and oregano; Spaghetti Al Tonno or spaghetti with fresh tuna, tomato, and basil.

They will also have fried squid with eggplant and zucchini tempura; and Cannoli Siciliani or stuffed pastry rolls with fresh cheese and mixed glazed fruit.

MTRCB issues a five-year permit to 'Kinatay'

MANILA - After struggling with censorship issues, filmmaker Brillante Mendoza was finally able to show his award-winning film "Kinatay (The Execution of P)" at the UP Film Institute (UPFI) Cine Adarna on Thursday night to a full audience.

Mendoza, who won the "Best Director" award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, was given a permit to show his film after an audience with MTRCB officials. He also happily announced that the MTRCB had given him a 5-year permit to show "Kinatay" in any outlet.

About 2 days before the scheduled screening of "Kinatay", Mendoza was in a quandary on whether to fight it out with the MTRCB or to have his film classified, risking possible censorship or the editing out of parts of his film.

“So, ang ginawa ko, in as much as gusto kong matuloy ang premiere showing, sabi ko, sige, magbabayad ako for the classification of my film,” said Mendoza during the open forum after the showing of the film.

He was instead invited to the MTRCB office to shed light on the issue last Tuesday. “I was asked to bring a copy of my film for showing at the review board and so the following day, I immediately sent one,” Mendoza said.

According to Dante Mendoza, Brillante’s other screen name, MTRCB left the film untouched. “Walang pinutol. Everything is intact,” Mendoza said happily.

'Still anti-censorship'

However, despite the recent MTRCB decision, Mendoza said he will still continue fighting against censorship and state regulation of films. “I am still for anti-censorship,” he confirmed.

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) had earlier advised the UPFI against showing unapproved films, despite the university's call for academic freedom and freedom of speech.

According to the MTRCB, the UP Film Center (now the UPFI) had been restructured as the UPFI and therefore was not free from censorship. The issue became a tug-of-war between UP and the state regulatory body.

Just the same, the Philippine premiere of the movie was set on July 30 at the UPFI Cine Adarna, weeks ahead of the MTRCB meeting. The local film community was very keen on the premiere, and "Kinatay" stars made the rounds promoting the movie at show business events.

During the late Douglas Quijano’s wake at the Heritage Park in Taguig City a couple of months ago, “Kinatay” lead actress Maria Isabel Lopez and MTRCB chief Ma. Consoliza Laguardia bumped into each other.

When Laguardia inquired about Mendoza's initial unwillingness to submit his film for review, Lopez replied: “Natatakot po yata si Direk (Mendoza) na ma-censor ang film."

Meanwhile, the UPFI management is readying its position paper to assert its independence from state regulation.

Ruffa Gutierrez claims her total independence in ‘Metro Magazine’ July

In Metro Magazine’s July issue, Ruffa Gutierrez shared how much she enjoys hosting The Buzz though she often gets caught in the controversial POV segment of the show. She has had to clear her name many times in the past few weeks about persistent rumors implicating her as John Lloyd Cruz’s newest ladylove soon who caused his breakup with girlfriend Liz Uy.

Whether or not people believe her whenever she has to defend herself on The Buzz is no longer an issue for her since she wouldn’t dare give up such an exciting job. “Yes, it’s a bit difficult at times but it’s part of what we are. I know how they feel, and I understand how it is. But that makes me more suited for the job, right? I know how to put it into context, and that makes me good at my job.”

Being teamed up with veteran talk show hosts Boy Abunda and Kris Aquino was also a big challenge for her to conquer, which means that she really has to work double time when it comes to tackling hot issues. “Hay naku, I do research ha! It’s not enough that I get the stuff from the writers, I like to call them (the people involved) and get more material. So that if there are things that aren’t accurate, at least I can help fix them,” she stressed. This has no doubt made relationships in her circle of celebrity friends quite complicated because she can easily blurt out their juicy secrets on the show. “There are a few who are careful of what they say around me, especially if they are the talk of the town for the moment. Some of them say, ‘No, don’t invite Ruffa, she’s with The Buzz.’ But a lot of them understand that the show has writers, and it’s not really me who decides what goes on the show,” she related.

Ruffa also explained in Metro Magazine that working in showbiz is the closest thing she could get to making a difference in other people’s lives. Being one of the most beautiful faces in the country coupled with her strength to overcome her rocky marriage to Yilmaz Bektas even led her to become Avon’s spokesperson for their Speak Out Against Domestic Violence campaign, an advocacy which she takes very seriously. But more importantly, the 35-year-old actress-host was determined to claim total independence as a grown woman from now on. “My goal for the coming year is that I take charge of my life. It’s always difficult breaking up with your past or things that you’re accustomed to, but I am a strong girl and I know that I’ll be able to do it,” she stated.

Jackie Rice is 'single and sexy'

After niya akong palakihin gaganuhin niya lang ako? Hindi naman yata totoo yan,” depensa ng young actress. Baka namimisinterpret lang daw ng ibang tao na baka offered projects pa lang daw naman ang mga iyon at hindi kung ano-anong masamang iniisip ng iba.

Available na ang Maxim July issue featuring Jackie Rice sa inyong mga favorite newsstands, kaya get na kayo ha!

Zaijian Jaranilla shines in StarStudio Magazine

n real life, Zaijian Jaranilla—popularly known as Santino of the primetime hit series May Bukas Pa—is very much like his character in the TV series. Aside from being a real charmer, the staff and crew of May Bukas Pa are all praises for Zaijian’s natural flair for acting. StarStudio Magazine’s August issue features today’s “boy wonder” and discusses what this seven-year-old kid is made of.

“Mabilis ang comprehension niya,” said Ethel Espiritu, the TV program’s production manager. “Nakakapag-memorize siya ng lines, even ‘yung mahahabang lines kaya niyang ilagay ‘yung tamang emotion.”

Manager Bryan Ancheta says that even without dialogue, Zaijian can already bring the message of a scene across. The child actor’s road manager Zen Galope of Star Magic agreed. “Physically, it’s his eyes. Nangungusap. Parang may sinasabi yung eyes niya every time tinitignan mo. Bagay talaga sa kanya yung role niya as Santino. Kasi ‘di ba, dun sa May Bukas Pa, kapag tinitignan niya yung mga tao, parang nag-iiba sila. Nababago sila ni Santino, nagiging mabait sila.”

But Zaijian’s charms are not limited by his role in May Bukas Pa. Even his co-stars attest that there is really something special about him. For instance, Dina Bonnevie is fond of the young actor. “Kapag nakikita nga po niya (Dina) si Zaijian, sasabihin niya, ‘Santino, pa-kiss naman,’” related Ancheta.

“Pagtawag sa kanya pabalik sa set, nasa character na agad siya,” revealed Dominic Ochoa, who is also part of the cast. “Ang dami ko ng nakatrabaho, ‘yung iba, mas matanda pang ‘di hamak kay Zaijian pero wala kang makukuha sa kanila kapag kaeksena mo. Eh, ito, seven years old lang, pero mga mata pa lang umaarte na. Sino ang hindi gaganahan kapag ganyan ang katrabaho mo?”

Read more about Zaijian and find out how he is off camera and what his take is on his popularity in the August issue of StarStudio Magazine.

"Gusto po naming i-klaro na si Dr. Belo po ay hindi akusado, she is merely a witness here and she is fully cooperative. Sa issue na mayroon bang participation si Dra. Belo sa pagrelease po ng mga videos na ito, klarong-klaro po sa ebidensya namin at sa katotohanan she did not release these videos, she did not reproduce these videos and in fact sobrang nalulungkot po si Dra. Belo because of what has happened and she condemns the release and circulation of these videos."

"And we will confirm that there is in fact such video, that they did shoot such a video but we want it very clear that this is a purely private video. It was not intended for anyone else to see, this was between two consenting adults and the agreement with Dr. Belo and Dr. Kho was pagkatapos i-shoot ng video at mapanood nila it will immediately be deleted."

Watch Entertainment Live and The Buzz over the weekend for more updates on this controversy.

TV Patrol Exclusive: Hayden Kho breaks his silence about Maricar Reyes

Even Hayden Kho was surprised when Maricar Reyes decided to face public scrutiny and resume her acting career after months of keeping silent about her involvement in the sex video controversy. As previously reported on ABS-CBN.com, the two were in a relationship back when they were still in medical school.

Now that the model-actress seems to be back on track, Hayden, however, can’t help but admire Maricar for keeping a dignified stance despite all the intrigues. “I am proud of her especially now na nakaharap na siya [sa TV]. May shows na siya ‘di ba? Tama ba? May mga teleserye na siya and she acts well, nakita ko rin. Ang galing! Parang sana makuha ko yung strength niya kasi ako nahihirapan ako ngayon. Parang lahat sila naka-move on na, parang ako na lang ata ang naiiwan,” he sadly stated.

Given the chance, Hayden wants to apologize to Maricar and her family for bringing them so much pain because of the scandal, but he just can’t face them yet. Hayden had nothing but good things to say about his ex-girlfriend. “If there’s anything na masasabi ko about Maricar, napakabait na tao at saka galing siya sa respectable family. Mabait din ang pamilya niyan. Kaya nga nahihiya ako sa kanya eh. Gusto kong mag-sorry sa kanya personally. Gusto kong puntahan yung family niya at mag-sorry personally, pero parang now is not the right time. Parang, I guess, hindi ko pa alam kung paano ko sila ia-approach,” he admitted.

Though he wasn’t allowed to give details about his sex videos, he clarified that there are only 11 videos and not 40 as rumored. He also clarified that Princess Velasco, his former friend Bistek Rosario’s ex-girlfriend, was definitely not in any of the videos. “Every time na may lumalabas na video diyan sa internet, ako din napapahiya, kasi ako din nakahubad dun, ako din tinitira ng mga tao. Pero siyempre, ewan ko, the message that I’m getting from the public is parang wala kang karapatang magsabing biktima ka dahil ikaw ang may kasalanan,” he lamented.

Hayden also cried foul regarding Katrina Halili’s decision to sue him for medical malpractice, denying her claim that he was not yet qualified to perform liposuction on her two years ago. “Sobrang unfair ng ginawa niya at saka ng abugado niya na kasuhan ako dun sa malpractice ng liposuction kasi hindi daw ako pwedeng mag-lipo and PMA (Philippine Medical Association) already made a ruling before pa na there’s nothing illegal about what I did. Pwede ako mag-lipo talaga,” he reasoned.

When asked if there was any truth to the rumors that he accidentally killed a patient during a liposuction operation in the past, he replied, “Hindi ako ang may kasalanan. Namatay na yung patient because of asthma, status asthmaticus (a condition of worsening asthma that does not respond to standard treatments). Tapos may mahabang story ‘yan eh pero hindi ko pwede sabihin.”

With the kind of legal trouble that he is facing at the moment, Hayden’s future certainly doesn’t look too bright as compared to his former life. “Tama ka, hindi na ako makakapag-practice. Hindi na ako makakapagtrabaho for the next how many years dahil sobrang napahiya ako. Hindi rin ako masyado makalabas ng bahay kasi bawat labas ko, bawat ngiti ko sa labas, titirahin ako sa media. Hindi din naman ako pwedeng umalis dahil naka-watch list din ako, so I’m trapped here. And so far, I’ve got nothing to do,” he added.

And contrary to popular belief, he and Vicki Belo are not together anymore. “I asked her if she could give me a second chance. Sinabi niya na, ‘Hayden, hindi na pwede kasi iba na eh, the stakes are higher. Pinagbigyan kita dati pero napahiya ako,’” he revealed.

Vilma Santos returns to television this Saturday on ABS-CBN

he first installment of Vilma: A Woman for All Seasons will finally be unveiled this Saturday, August 1. The first of its kind, Vilma Santos proudly stated that she took part in the brainstorming sessions for the TV specials that will showcase the reasons why she’s one of the country’s most successful stars of all time.

“I’m part of the idea. Two years nang nakaplano na bigyan ako ng special tribute pero hindi ako pumapayag kasi unang-una, kukunin yung tagal ko sa showbiz. Pangalawa, yung golden golden na sinasabi. Ayoko nga maging golden girl, 38 lang ako no!” she joked. “So napag-usapan na why not ipakita natin ang iba-ibang mukha ni Vilma. Sabi ko, yeah kasi maganda yun pwede ako mag-share ng mga experience ko. Hindi ako nahirapan dun kasi gusto ko rin magkwento,” she added.

Hosted by Claudine Barretto, the focus of the first episode is Vilma Santos as an actress. Viewers are going to be treated to on-the-spot acting workshops with Kim Chiu, Coco Martin, Nikki Gil, and Megan Young. Though she was truly impressed with these up and coming young stars, the Star for All Seasons revealed that Claudine (whom she starred with in Anak) is the one who can follow in her footsteps when it comes to longevity in the biz. “Sa master class na ginawa namin, hiningan ako ng ganyang opinyon pero wala akong nasabi except si Claudine. Gustong-gusto ko yung pagiging flexible niya—whether magpasexy, magpakamartir, or magkontrabida kapani-paniwala. And kahit paano nadaanan ko sa career ko yun. At saka para sa akin hindi totoo yung porke may award ka na magaling ka na. Non-stop learning ang acting,” she stressed.

One of her favorite topics included her tried and tested onscreen chemistry with Christopher de Leon which also served as an example to those who soared to stardom through love teams. “Kami ni Boyet magtinginan lang kami, kahit anong sabihin nun, kaya kong sagutin. Ganun yung chemistry namin. Hindi mo kailangan magkaroon ng love angle [in real life]. And yet tanggap kami ni Boyet na kapag sa movies naniniwala yung tao na ganon kami ka-in love sa isa’t-isa.” She further told her young students the importance of teamwork in shooting scenes. “Sinabi ko din na ako yung klaseng artista na nagre-rely sa eksena. Kasi kahit na sabihin mo na marunong ka umarte, kapag ‘di ka binigyan ng suporta ng ka-eksena mo, hindi mo alam kung o-OA ka or bababa ka [ng energy level] eh. Kaya as an artist kailangan ibibigay mo yung 100% na suporta mo sa ka-eksena mo kasi d’yan siya huhugot ng emotions,” she added.

Catch all these and more as Vilma: A Woman for All Seasons premieres this Saturday, August 1, right after Maalaala Mo Kaya.
