Nico Antonio plays a closeted gay in ‘M3’

Singer-actor Nico Antonio shared with ABS-CBN.com that he will be part of the upcoming romantic comedy series M3: Malay Mo, Ma-develop starring Aga Muhlach and Ai-Ai de las Alas. Nico will play a gay character who hasn’t come out of the closet yet.

Nico said that he readily accepted the role in M3 because he finds doing a gay character challenging. “When I underwent Pen Medina’s workshop, pinagawa niya sa akin ‘yung umiyak at magalit. Kasi dati may phobia ako sa mga bakla. Pero nagka-friend ako na babaeng bakla, and I met her friends na mga bakla and I learned na okay naman pala sila kasama.”

The 27-year-old son of lawyer Joji Antonio candidly shared his experience doing a gay role in the independent movie Ang Laro ng Buhay ni Juan.

Nico talked about how he was able to find his passion for acting when he started out as a talent, doing cameo appearances in a few TV and movie projects. “I’ve experienced the office life na, sa call center and other jobs, hindi talaga ako nasiyahan e. Naging talent ako sa Panday. Pa talent talent lang ako before I became a part of Star Magic. Iba pala talaga kapag gusto mo ‘yung ginagawa mo kasi less stressful.”

But he clarified that it is no longer part of his goal as an actor to be a famous matinee idol, but rather be recognized for his talent. “Very modest lang ang goal ko in terms of acting. Gusto ko lang maging the best character actor of my generation. Hindi ko na gustong maging matinee idol pa because for one I’m already 27. Also I don’t have the looks to be a matinee idol. Basta maging consistent lang ‘yung work at makilala ako na magaling umarte.”

Nico and his group VoizBoys, which includes Jay-R Siaboc, Tom Rodriguez, and Guji Lorenzana, will have their first major concert on May 29. Although VoizBoys is ready to give their best for their concert, Nico said that they will leave the dancing to other groups. We’ll be singing cuts from our album and other covers.
