MANILA, Philippines - Actress-turned-politician Vilma Santos has been re-elected governor of Batangas.
The Commission on Elections' board of canvassers on Wednesday night proclaimed her the winner of the gubernatorial race in the province.
Santos has beaten political rival Edna Sanchez by a wide margin. The re-elected governor received 602,397 votes, while Sanchez garnered 390, 680 votes.
Sanchez replaced her husband, Armand, in the race after the former governor died due to cardiopulmonary arrest and multiple-organ failure.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Santos thanked the BatangueƱos for supporting her in the last elections. "Maraming, maraming salamat po sa lahat. Higit sa lahat sa mga BatangueƱo na nagbigay ng tiwala ulit [sa akin]."
Santos also appealed to all Filipinos to reunite after the May 10 elections. "Sa ngayon ay tapos na po ang Mayo 10. Nag-desisyon na ang tao... It's time for us to reunite.”
Santos' husband Ralph Recto and youngest son, Ryan, were present during the proclamation.
"Of course, I'm very proud of her. I'm very fortunate to have Vilma as a wife," Recto said.
Meanwhile, Santos said she will concentrate on her work as a governor, and it might take her a long time to do another movie.
Santos is reportedly being eyed to portray the late former president Corazon Aquino, mother of Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III, in an upcoming film based on the life of the former leader. –SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon
